Delicatessen is a word that gets thrown around pretty carelessly these days. It's a term that takes in any food counter that offers meats and cheeses, maybe some potato salad or sliced nova. But once upon a time, delicatessen meant something. It meant experienced cooks crafting family favorites –the same Jewish soul food that mothers and Bubbes made for their own families. Ruven's is a Kosher-style delicatessen just like the first one Steve Ratinetz opened in New York in 1990. When he moved to Florida, he learned that many of his regulars had moved south, but they still craved the food they'd grown up with. Steve knew he could re-create their favorites, but he went one step further and re-created a little slice of New York. We may be in South Florida, but step inside Ruven's, and the aroma of the dishes you remember along with the murals of old New York and the brick walls and fire escapes reminiscent of tenement neighborhoods will take you back.
